Brainstorming Future Home Improvement Projects
For most of us, the harsh, confining winter weather can make home renovations rather cumbersome. From painting restrictions to new replacement windows, there are a number of projects that are more appealing in the spring and summer months. Yet, just because the weather’s being meddlesome, it doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice improving areas of your home for the present and future. As a matter of fact, brainstorming projects such as upgrades to your home’s siding, roofing and windows during the winter can better prepare you for when warmer weather returns.
Having a master plan in place can save you in a number of ways.
Cost-Effective
Drawing up a new roof, siding installation or replacing windows lets you compare and contrast different companies, styles and overall quality of the product. Part of that compare and contrast allows you to single out the right price that’s suitable for your budget. That peace of mind in knowing you’ve got a quality product without breaking the bank is second to none.
Get Numerous Estimates
Having several free estimates from contractors let’s you understand not just the price point, but how long the project will take to be completed (should you be doing multiple remodels at once). Also, it might be a good idea to ask around your inner circle and gauge their satisfaction with any contract work they’ve had done on their home.
Research To Your Heart’s Content
This tip falls in the same category as getting referrals, but has more to do with exploring other avenues for gathering intel. By going online and searching for contractors, you’ll come across sites like, Angie’s List, which has a plethora of home contractor reviews and critiques. It’s the same as Google reviews, but the only are of concern for both is sometimes the reviews may not be as trustworthy as you’d think. The grey area with this is that you’ll have no idea whether the reviewer is a competitor intentionally bad-mouthing a product or if it’s genuine. However, if it’s a big company, you’ll have a good number of reviews to sift through, and generally a majority of these are legit.
Set a Date
After all the brainstorming, researching and comparing/contrasting, you should have enough hard evidence, trust and budget to complete your dream renovation when the temperature cooperates. That’s when you nail down a date for when to get in touch with a contractor or go it alone and do the project yourself. With the date set and your supplies ready, the winter doldrums will soon pass and a bright shiny addition to your home will be calling out for you.
