4 Tips for Upgrading a Home

After a while it is typical for home owners to change the appearance of their home.  Sometimes they get bored of the present look.  Other times people were unable to afford to fix up their home when they bought it and now that they can afford it they wish to alter the look of their home.  It can be scary to make a dramatic transformation so a few touch ups here and there may be a better solution.  Rather than knocking out walls or expanding the home, there are a few fixes that can be done to make a space look different and possibly larger.

Drywall Textures

Adding texture to the walls can create an entirely different look for the space.  Texture can make a home look more modern and it can also make a period home look more original.  There are a few different styles of textures that can be used.  Skip and trowel or brushed textures will give a more updated appearance.  A hand-troweled joint compound can give a room a more Victorian look.  A popular style of texture is an orange peel finish.  An orange peel finish is done by spraying a texture compound on a smooth wall.

Faux Painting

Adding color to the walls is an easy way to change the atmosphere in a room.  A popular way of adding color is to use faux painting.  Faux painting is decorative and in many cases it can look like wallpaper.  There are several different techniques to use known as: glazing, sponging, ragging, wood graining, and also freehand.  This paining technique can be applied to flat surfaces or textured walls.  Faux painting can even give the appearance of stone, peeling paint, linen, cloth, and denim.  Some textured paints contain silica to give the walls a suede look.

Wall Coverings

Many people these days are using non tradition wall coverings instead of paint or wallpaper.  Some people have put bright fabrics, soft cork, or even colored glass on the walls to give the room an edgy transformation.  Foil can be put up on the walls but it is difficult to work with because it shows the littlest imperfections.  Silver is more expensive but it is easier to work with and both give the walls a shiny surface.  Cork will give a room a more rustic look and can make the space feel cozier.  Paper-backed fabric has a high-quality look and is easy to install.

Skylight

Many times it is just a matter of making a room look brighter.  A skylight or two can be installed in the roof to let in sunlight.  Added light can give the allusion that the given room will look bigger and cleaner.  Skylights give off so much extra light that it is possible for the homeowner to turn on the light less often.  This can reduce the electrical bill and increase the property value.  Custom skylights can be installed to meet the needs of any space.
