5 Hot Glue Gun Repairs Around the House
The use of hot glue in arts and crafts is well known for its quick drying, durability, flexibility and ability to stick to virtually any surface. Aside from being useful for creative pursuits, hot glue is also an amazing repair medium!
1- Figurines
It’s not uncommon for small knick-knacks to get knocked onto the floor and have a piece break off. Don’t write it off as a lost cause and trash it. Instead, take out your hot glue gun and simply apply a small amount of glue, making sure to avoid any excess, which could ooze onto other areas and be difficult to remove. Quickly reattach the broken piece and let it dry completely. Unless your piece sustained small chips around the break, nothing should look out of the ordinary.
2- Clay Pots
One hot glue repair people don’t often think of is for their cracked plant pots. Because it conforms and adheres so well to porous surfaces like ceramic and clay, hot glue will fill in the crack, hold the pot together and prevent the crack from worsening. Clay pots, especially in certain styles and sizes, can be quite expensive and aren’t easily available year round, so this fix could save you a lot of money and effort.
3- Toys
Imagine your child’s favorite toy has broken and he or she is inconsolable. Hot glue can be used to quickly repair the toy and make you the hero of your child’s day. This is particularly helpful on plastic toys, which tend to break cleanly and into few pieces, making them easy to mend with a hot glue gun.
4- Silk Plants
Silk flowers are attractive and need no care, aside from occasional dusting, but much like real plants, their leaves and flowers tend to come off easily. A tiny drop of hot glue will reattach the part in question and decrease its likelihood of falling off in the future.
5- Plugging Holes
Because hot glue holds its form well, it makes an ideal substance with which to plug up unwanted holes. Holes in your walls or in corners can let bugs into your home. Too large or too many drainage holes in plant pots can let the soil erode. Nail holes can be unsightly and become larger if left unfilled. All of these troublesome holes can be taken care of with a shot of glue.
While hot glue is generally regarded as being safer than super glue or rubber cement, it is capable of causing some pretty painful burns. Always use caution, don’t let the hot glue gun come into contact with flammable or meltable surfaces like the cord and keep some cold water nearby in case you get any glue on you.
